Wow.
I had this app quite a while ago and I quite liked it. It was fair and was a freemium service that allowed you to watch anime but with ads, while being a paid member allowed you an ad-free viewing experience.
Now, youre forced to be a subscriber to even VIEW the content, which is a pretty pathetic move from a viewing service that had every chance to increase its revenue by simply adding a small bit more ads and raising the price a bit. It would be okay if this app had their current revenue system in the first place, much like Netflix. But no, theyve decided that they really do need more money and strong-armed their once-loyal fanbase into paying something that used to be (somewhat) free.
Oh, and for those who say: "Get a job and pay the bloody subscription," theres Viewster, who actually allows you to watch anime for FREE. Its selection might not match Crunchyroll, but its pretty close from what Ive seen. Crunchyroll used to compete with that app, but now its a no-brainer: Viewster is now the way to go. And because those loyal fans of Crunchyroll know that the app is competing with Viewster, theyre sticking by it. That is, until the latest update, which basically screamed: "Choose the alternative! Its 100% cheaper with almost the same quality as Crunchyroll!"
I hope the guys behind the scenes see what theyve done before too much damage has been done. I really did like the app a while ago.
Disclosure: I wasnt paid by Viewster to write this less-than-detailed review. Just merely commenting on the state of Crunchyroll.
